GOALS
Our program goals are challenging. Within one year, nine out of ten children in the program will show:
- An increase in physical activity, focus, self-control and academic performance.
- A decrease in the number of truancies, suspensions and incidents of disruptive behavior.
METHODS
There are three components for accomplishing the program objectives:
- Training: Black Belt instructors offer karate classes to youngsters on-site, after school, at least twice weekly. Junior Black Belts and aspiring Black Belt students assist the adult instructors. Each class is 45 to 60 minutes long. Class sizes are 25 to 35 students, with two instructors per class
- Classes are structured to integrate discipline, respect, self confidence, approval, philosophy, activity and core teachings based upon universal principles that honor mankind.
- Tournaments: All the children are encouraged to participate in semi-annual karate tournaments produced by the California Japanese Karate Federation. K.I.C.K. arranges for transportation and pays for tournament enrollment fees. A heritage of excellence is passed on to the children through their training, preparation and participation in tournament competition.
EVALUATION
The K.I.C.K. program goals and objectives are measured in two ways: Attendance forms and parent/guardian evaluation surveys. Every youth participating in a training class is required to sign in on the attendance form.
When the young person begins the program, a baseline parent/guardian evaluation is administered via telephone. After the baseline measurement is captured, the surveys are administered every year.
