Traditional Karate
For the Next Generation

Where Traditional Lineage Shapes Tomorrow's Leaders

Martial arts training at Karate of LA moves far beyond basic physical drills. Rooted in the authentic lineage of traditional Goju-Ryu, our programs focus on establishing an unshakeable foundation of self-control, mental clarity, and personal integrity. Through specialized mentorship on our floor, we guide students to transform focus and discipline into long-term personal leadership traits.

Character Development

Traditional Goju-Ryu is structured around character development. Our students learn to carry calm focus, respect, and deep personal accountability off the mat and into their daily routines.

The K.I.C.K. Crew

Our flagship youth program—Karate for Independent and Confident Kids—is specifically crafted to help children navigate modern academic and social pressures by nurturing real-world self-confidence.

Our Community Mission

As a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, your presence directly supports sponsored tuition slots and community programs, ensuring local development remains accessible to every family.

What Our Community Is Saying

Read firsthand stories from parents, adult martial artists, and youth students training on our Westside floor.

"My daughter has been a part of this dojo for 10 years, we love it! Sen-sei Vassie is an amazing man. They are all family to us."

Wendy M. Dojo Parent

“The thing I love most about being a part of the dojo community is that it IS a community. It is a place to learn, but it is fun and feels like family. I have learned so much... especially about respect and discipline. This helps me at school because you have to have a lot of focus and show respect to people around you. The dojo has helped me learn a good balance of fun and focus.”

Mia Youth Student

"This is an absolutely great dojo. If you want good professional karate lessons, feel welcomed the minute you walk into the room and actually have a teacher that cares about your progress; then this is the place for you."

Manuela G. Adult Practitioner

"This is more than a dojo; it is a safe place for everyone to learn martial arts from one of the finest instructors and all-around human beings in the world. Whether a four-year-old child, a 50-year-old woman or a 25-year-old man at his physical peak, Vassie Shihan and his trusted senior students train all with discipline, passion and compassion. You will work hard. You will train hard. You will love it!"

Deborah M. Traditional Martial Artist

“I have trained under Vassie Shihan for almost 10 years. Karate has been a huge part of my life, so when I looked to pick it up again as an adult I was very picky in choosing my school. I will say without hesitation that he is one of the most knowledgeable martial artists and teachers alive. People travel from all over the world just to train with him for a few days — at Santa Monica Seiwa Kai (Karate of LA), you can train with him a few days every week."

By providing our programs at our permanent 12416 Santa Monica Blvd dojo (near the Centinela Ave intersection), we offer a stable, encouraging environment where youth and adults alike can challenge their limits. Your contribution to Karate for Inner City Kids directly sponsors dedicated students who wouldn't otherwise have access to high-quality martial arts instruction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not at all! Our classes are structured to welcome completely new students at any point in their developmental journey. Instructors provide dedicated, hands-on guidance to ensure beginners feel secure, supported, and appropriately challenged from day one.

To establish a consistent physical foundation and truly absorb the traditional karate milestones, we generally recommend attending 2 to 3 classes per week. This rhythm provides the optimal balance between skill development, active muscle retention, and school schedules.

As a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, we firmly believe financial barriers should never stand in the way of a child's character growth. We offer sponsored tuition paths and dynamic, sliding-scale scholarships for families experiencing economic shifts.
